NUTRITION
AND PREVENTATIVE HEALTH LINKS
Note about the
stars/grading. As we are only including sites that we really like, the
starring starts with one star = good. Five stars = "utterly
invaluable - why are we cluttering up the web when this one has so much
to offer..."
****We have found the National
Library of Medicine, http://medlineplus.gov/,
to be an invaluable
source of easy-to-read background information on medical conditions,
from the common to the extremely rare. When you get into the site,
click on "Health Topics" for a comprehensive medical
encyclopedia.
***For more information on herbal
products and nutritional supplements, have a look at the Net Doctor, http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/
There's a huge amount of information here and
they do have an excellent search facility.
***Also within the National Library of
Medicine website, their "Entrez
Med" (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
)
section has many thousands of scientific research
publications. The database can be searched by entering key words
or authors names; many of the scientific papers summarised in the
"Science" section of this website were found there.

****http://www.healthyeating.net/he_2.htm
is an absolute gem of a site. It offers a "Nutrition 101" (i.e.
Nutritional basics "101" is what is used in the United States for
first year university courses) It's
declared aim is to Link You to Nutrition &
Fitness Info You Can Use.
And it does just that - pretty well any site that has any claim to solid
nutritional know-how is there!
One
of the many "about.com" sites that provides a plethora of
information on so many subjects.
offers “Over
1500 International and Traditional British recipes from starters to
desserts and everything in between !" The webmaster, no doubt
realising how at sea I am with recipes given in "cups" gives an
extensive conversion chart.

Being able to buy good
quality food is - stating the obvious - vital to good nutrition and thus
to good health. These are some of the places where we shop online for
food.
I do a lot of my general
shopping on-line, because it is so much more convenient for me than traipsing
around supermarkets,
 |
Out
of this World
is a small chain of ethical, fair-trade, organic supermarkets,
mainly in the North of England (Newcastle, Leeds, York &
Nottingham) so far. |
 |
I buy meat from
specialist producers: Graig Farm Organics produces wonderful
meat, especially their mountain mutton. They can be found at www.graigfarm.co.uk. |
 |
My final internet port of
call for meat is www.myonlinebutcher.co.uk
where I buy a supply of extremely well prepared ready-cook meals (such
as beef goulash) at very reasonable prices. When I first bought from
them I assumed that the term "two portions" probably meant
to serve two very small appetites - but it doesn't: the portion sizing
is generous. |
Increasingly,
I shop for non-food items on-line - and not just the ubiquitous Amazon!
also sell shoes and slippers suitable for people with swollen feet.
Their catalogue contains a wealth of information on managing this
condition. |

*****www.bubl.ac.uk
A marvellous source of information about sites on the web, arranged under
the same coding that is used in libraries.
does exactly that - it will find whole articles about subjects that you
key into its search facility. It is less academic than the Scientific info
sites given above, but will provide full length articles from, for
example, Gale's Medical Encyclopaedia.
*****Julie Todd www.julietodd.co.uk
(reflexologist, sports
therapist, aromatherapist, skin care advisor, nutritional advisor; she
can also provide the nutritional supplements that Maggi uses).
She
has helped Maggi enormously with the problems related to late effects of
polio - and is thoroughly recommended by all her customers.
****The
British Polio Fellowship www.britishpolio.org
, (of which Maggi has been a
member since she was six!) has a new, easy to navigate, website.
They have been a great support over the years, not least in publicising
our findings about managing chronic oedema.
