Title
of Paul's PhD Thesis: The Development and Properties of pre-B cells and
B-lymphocytes. November 1980.
My
PhD Supervisor was Dr HNA Willcox, now of the Institute of Molecular
Medicine, University of Oxford.
He and his wife, Pip, remain fast and
valued friends of myself and my wife.

My
PhD project involved research on the ontogeny of immunoglobulin producing
B-lymphocytes. B-lymphocyte precursors were enriched by density separation
methods and found to contain immunoglobulin µ-chains
but lack the surface immunoglobulin found in mature B-lymphocytes. My
investigations of the surface markers, physical characteristics, responses
to mitogens in vitro and
location of these cells in the body, as compared with mature
B-lymphocytes, formed the basis of a hypothesis of B-lymphocyte
development described in publications 3 and 4 in my list of published
work..
